Planning
If you desire to accomplish a successful relocation experience, then planning, lists, and good timing are necessary. Mail notifications to banks, healthcare providers, utility companies, employees, schools, etc., of your new address and other details. Make sure to do this for both your new and current locations. Make lists of any loans or other different payments you need to take care of monthly. Don’t forget to call the moving company to reserve a date for your move.

Research moving companies
Typically, moving companies will say or indicate if they have a DOT license. If this detail is omitted, it most likely means they don’t have one. It is of great importance to make sure whether or not the moving company you choose has a DOT license. You may need to contact the Department Of Transportation personally before you make a final decision. Do not hire a moving company that does not have this license. You may also check to see if they are listed with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). in addition, verify if the moving company you choose has any insurance for you belongings for the duration of your move in advance.

Packing
Gather all packing materials you’re going to need well before your set moving date. Most moving companies will have moving materials available for purchase. If they don’t, you can always buy them from a nearby store. Some of these items you will want include durable boxes, strong packing tape, packing peanuts, plastic bags, bubble wrap, and newspapers. Thoroughly look through your closets and storage rooms to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. Decide on which items you want to keep, sell, donate, and discard ahead of time. In the end, doing this will save you time and money. While you’re packing, place your heavier items on the bottom of the boxes the lighter ones on top of them. If you decide upon using the provided wardrobe boxes moving companies usually provide, be sure to tightly pack your clothing so they won’t shift around on the hangers. Doing this will save much needed time when unpacking your clothing items.

Non-permitted items
It is illegal to relocate plants across state lines, so this is the reason moving companies will not move any plants. Also, they cannot be packed effectively. Federal law prohibits moving companies from transporting certain types of items that include: fertilizers, fireworks, ammunition, weapons, poison, pesticides, acids, fuels, liquids and laundry additives (bleach and ammonia), flammables, explosives and corrosives, and household and car batteries.

Your most valuable objects
Ask movers to assist you in packing your bigger valuable objects that require extra special handling. Set aside a special area for your most valuable items, such as: deeds, school and medical records, financial documents, small expensive electronics, a list of important medical information about each family member and pet in the family, prescription drugs, jewelry, media with special memories, etc. Transport all of these items yourself. Do let the movers do this task.
